Streets of Rage 3Sega has had some tough going in the video game industry over the years. Now known primarily as a third party developer, there was a time when Sega made a strong bid as the dominant name in all of gaming, rivaling Nintendo as the ultimate name in video games. This all took place in what I consider the glory days of video games, the sprite-filled splendor of the 16-bit era.

Sega, determined to not let the legacy of their multi-million selling 16-bit system the Sega Genesis die (or at least make a few quick bucks in its memory), has recently announced the upcoming release of a new compilation of Genesis games for the PS3 and XBox360.

The compilation is set to showcase over 40 games originally released on the Genesis, or Sega Mega Drive if you live outside North America, all of which will be those that were first party developed. The list of games will include the cult classic Ecco the Dolphin, the woefully underrated Final Fight clones Streets of Rage 1-3 and the obvious additions of the first three Sonic the Hedgehog games.

The package will be called "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" Stateside, while everyone else will need to look out for the name "Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection." The new collection will also utilize the HD capabilities of both the X360 and the PS3, solving the awful image quality problem of hooking up a Genesis to an HDTV. Be sure to check out this promising collection when it lands in January of '09.
