Poseidon…both movie and ship belong at the bottom of the sea…

I don’t want to say the trailers tainted my view of this movie, but they did already plant that “yeah right” seed in my head. A rogue wave that flips over a modern day cruise liner??!! Umm…ok…sure.

I set that aside and tried to watch this movie with all fairness. There was a decent cast in the movie. Josh Lucas who plays Dylan Johns. Dylan is by far the hero of the movie. For some unexplained reason, he has vast knowledge of ships which helps in leading to their survival. Where he has obtained this knowledge from isn’t revealed and I kept wondering during the entire movie if he was going to come out and say he was a former Navy S.E.A.L. That never happened. So it remains a mystery.

Kurt Russell who plays Robert Ramsey. Robert is aboard the cruise ship with his daughter and her fiancé. It is quickly revealed that Robert is a former fire fighter and Mayor. The fire fighter background has more relevance than him being a Mayor. In truth, I have no idea why they even gave that additional information on his background in regards to him being a former Mayor. It had no bearing on the plot whatsoever.

Jacinda Barrett who plays Maggie James. Maggie is really a mundane character in the movie. Her role really provides no benefit at all to the plot.

Richard Dreyfuss who plays Richard Nelson. Richard plays Richard who happens to be a homosexual who is about ready to end his life over a recent break up. His role also provides no benefit at all to the plot.

The characters are really rammed down your throat in the first ten minutes of the movie. I felt much more time could have been taken to elaborate on each character as well as having them interact with one another. Certain things like I mentioned with Robert and Richard have absolutely no relevance on the plot or movie whatsoever. It just felt like plain ol’ filler.

The plot didn’t fair much better either. It really came across as Titanic Part II. We have a modern day cruise liner afloat in the ocean. Besides hitting an iceberg (see the Titanic) there’s not many more ways to sink a big ship like this. Unless you consider a rogue wave. I’ve heard of rogue waves, but none the size that would be able to topple a modern day cruise line that is depicted in the movie. Most cruise ships nowadays have ten or more decks. So let’s safely say, that’s equivalent to a five story building. You’re trying to tell me a wave the size of a five story building came out of nowhere and flipped this ship over? Really hard to swallow. Maybe a tsunami wave, but you’re only going to find waves that size at shore.

Moving past the wave issue. All we have now is a flipped over cruise liner with people trying to get out and survive. Sound familiar? If so, then you’ve seen the movie Titanic. Poseidon really doesn’t really differentiate itself from Titanic either. Both have sinking ships, heroes that die and people trying to save themselves. I found it difficult to believe that only five people, out of let’s safely say 500 onboard the Poseidon managed to survive. You’re trying to tell me that no one else figured out to wait till a room flooded and swim out??? In the beginning when you have the shipped flipped over initially, I found myself rolling my eyes as to how many differnt ways people were going to die. Enough was enough with the screaming and yelling. Move on to the rest of the uninteresting movie.

Poseidon has a run time of 99 minutes which is rather short as well. You can only have so much moving from room to room and watching people almost drown. There were times that the movie had some suspense and you wondered who was going to survive or not, but that was about it.

There is really no need to watch this in the theaters at all. Especially at the price of movie tickets nowadays (right jazz?). Save your time and hard earned money and wait till this comes out on DVD for rental. It’ll make a decent rental and you definitely won’t lose anything by watching it on your TV or home theater.
