Earlier this year, I had the chance to see Wayne Wang's The Princess of Nebraska at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival but regretfully missed it (instead, I saw a film directed by Princess' cinematographer Richard Wong, Option 3, which was bueno excellente). I figured I'd have another chance to see it before it hits what I was sure to be a limited theatrical release after the film got picked up by Magnolia Pictures. Little did I know that the film would make its world premiere on... wait for it... YouTube.

YouTube launched its Screening Room channel in June, offering a place for select independent films to be available to a worldwide audience for free. So far, they only have short films. Princess of Nebraska will be the first feature-length film by a studio released on YouTube.

"The Princess of Nebraska is about a young woman from China who tries to locate her identity through different kinds of new media," Wang said. "The piece was shot with this kind of mentality with various kinds of easily accessible digital sources. I am very excited that the distribution will be consistent with the way the piece was conceived and produced."

The film is about a foreign exchange student from China who travels from Nebraska to San Francisco to get an abortion. It premieres free of charge on YouTube October 17th.

Don't look for Hollywood movies to adopt this practice, though...
