The Dark Knight has officially entered the Oscar race. Warner Bros launched a site promoting their Oscar bids, which include Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino and The Dark Knight. The site includes a list of awards they're shooting for, a calendar for free Guild screenings in New York, LA, San Francisco and London, and a link to download the script.

The movie is a big hit for them (now nearing the $1 billion worldwide mark), and they're hoping to translate that into Academy gold. Their For Your Consideration page lists the following awards as the ones they're hoping to get noms for: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Make-Up, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

Take a look at the site

Everyone and their mothers are confident that Heath Ledger would get that Best Supporting Actor role. No disrespect to Bale, but a nomination for Bruce Wayne in this movie is very unlikely. Ditto to Gyllenhaal, Freeman and Caine. Oldman and Eckhart are always possible, but don't hold your breath.

Batman Begins only received one nomination in 2006, for Wally Pfister's cinematography. People argued the merit of that nom, but Batman Begins had a number of majestic wide shots and great plays with lighting that made the mood effective. Pfister took those strengths further in TDK, and with the extra oomph delivered by those IMAX shots, here's hoping the Academy voters would nominate him a second time.

Best Adapted Screenplay is also possible—it's the kind of dense, quick and sweeping screenplay the Oscars like—and to help make up their mind, the full script is available for download here.

The big daddy of all speculations, of course, is whether or not it'll get a Best Picture nom. It's a very big possibility, and when the Academy announces the rest of the contenders, then we can talk about its chances of winning. It's slim, considering the other movies it might be up against (as Lex pointed out, Slumdog Millionaire and Benjamin Button will be the toughest hurdles), but The Dark Knight, despite its comic book origins and bombastic action set pieces, is an old school crime epic, and the Oscars loves those.

I hope the academy has enough sense to nominate The Dark Knight in the best picture and best director category. A Best supporting actor nomination for Heath Ledger is almost a given....
