Re-Inventing "Re-Animator" PDF Print E-mail

After the Evil Dead series, the Re-Animator trilogy is probably my favorite horror-comedy franchise. Stuart Gordon's original film stands as the best blend of horror and comedy, perfectly mixing sex and gore into one hilarious adventure. I daresay it's better than any of the three Evil Dead movies. The only reason the Herbert West trilogy isn't as good as Ash's is the weak sequel Bride of the Re-Animator, a misstep between the brilliant original and the madcap nuttiness of Beyond Re-Animator.

So the news that there might be a new TV show with Herbert West brings me mixed feelings. It sounds like this new show would have nothing to do with the movies, though—loosely basing itself on H.P. Lovecraft's original story instead.

Comics trailblazer and Marvel Chairman Emeritus Stan Lee is developing an hour-long drama at Showtime about the life of a gay teenage superhero. The series is based on a 2007 novel by Perry Moore called Hero. Moore is a screenwriter and film director, but is best known as the producer of the Chronicles of Narnia movies. He is writing the pilot for the Showtime series.

In Hero, high schooler Thom Creed finds his superpowers manifesting just as he's beginning to realize his own sexual orientation. Fearing shame and backlash from his homophobic hometown, he struggles to keep both his powers and homosexuality a secret.

"South Park" Bet on Obama Win PDF Print E-mail

This week on South Park, the show did the impressive feat of airing an episode about Barack Obama's election win less than 24 hours after the announcement. South Park has always had amazingly fast turnaround when it comes to recent events, but "About Last Night..." was not just fast, it was damn fast. So how did they do it? Make an episode that's just waiting to have the winner inserted? Make two different episodes depending on the outcome?

Nope. They just bet Obama would win and hoped they got it right.

A Second Chance for "Heroes" PDF Print E-mail

Feeling pressure from an obviously unhappy NBC, Heroes creator Tim Kring finally fired the show's top two showrunners (Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander) last Sunday in an effort to overhaul the failing show yet again. Can you say, good riddance?

Hate to say I told you so, but it looks like my unflattering prediction for Season 3 was not off. Poised to "fix" the problems of Season 2, the show's third season ended up alienating even more fans and is currently struggling in the ratings. I admit I haven't seen the last two episodes, because after episode 5 I finally decided that there are better things to do on a Monday night than watch leftover food turn into rotting garbage, but from what I've heard from disappointed fans who are still desperately holding on to hope that it'll get better, I am not missing much. With that said, I might have to start watching again after the break if a certain E! Online scoop is true, because it can very well signal a revival for Heroes.

Funniest Political Attack Ad Ever! PDF Print E-mail

prop8ad.jpgTake a look at this hilarious new political ad that started airing today on CNN, MSNBC and Comedy Central in certain California cities (including San Francisco, where yours truly resides). I saw it on MSNBC this morning during election coverage and started cracking up because of how utterly ridiculous it is. This 1 minute sketch, called Home Invasion, urges people to Vote No on California's Prop 8 (the gay marriage ban) by showing two members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints attacking a lesbian couple's home. It's like The Strangers, but with license-tearing Mormons. I love it.

Holy Crap, John McCain Stabbed Palin in the Back on "SNL" PDF Print E-mail
Written by Arya Ponto
Sunday, 02 November 2008

As of writing, Saturday Light Live is still airing here in the West Coast, but NBC.com already has clips from the episode online. The show opened with a McCain appearance, unsurprisingly accompanied by Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin. What was surprising was how the Senator's sketch mercilessly made fun of Governor Palin. Either John McCain didn't get the jokes presented in the sketch (unlikely) or he knew that most of the jabs were aimed at his running mate and not him so he didn't care; whatever the case may be, it's hard to believe that his campaign allowed him to appear in this... unless this is McCain's staffers' way of hitting Palin back for "going rogue." With only 3 days left in this election, are we seeing the Republican ticket splintering?

Saturday, 01 November 2008

mstlogo.jpgIn time for the holidays, the greatest cult TV show of all time, Mystery Science Theater 3000, is getting a 20th Anniversary Box Set treatment through Shout Factory. So if your 401(k) hasn’t been decimated to dimes yet, it’s time for fans to dip in and take advantage of this limited offer. And for those of you who aren’t fans (or God forbid, have never even heard of the show)…well, I guess I wouldn’t suggest you cough up the fifty bucks on a whim, but you should definitely get to your web browsers or run to a video store and get educated. You can even view entire episodes online for free: try Space Mutiny. It’s a cult show for a reason (not for all tastes), but those attuned will love it.

Mark Wahlberg Upstages Sarah Palin Again PDF Print E-mail

markwahlberganimals.jpgLast week on SNL, people continued to tune in for Tina Fey's adorable Sarah Palin impression in a spoof of the Vice Presidential debate. I thought the running joke was starting wear thin and noted a more impressive (but not as popular) sketch where Andy Samberg does an impression of Mark Wahlberg talking to animals.

This week, those sketches make a return, but this time with their real counterparts. All the news media are talking about Sarah Palin's appearance last night, but it was honestly not as funny as Mark Wahlberg's.

Indiana Jones and the George Lucas O Face PDF Print E-mail

lucas-oface.jpgSouth Park is back!

The biggest balls on television had its return last night, and it couldn't have been more satisfying, especially to all of us who had to suffer the indignation of watching Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. In the episode, the boys confront the traumatizing experience of watching the film, which they remember vividly as "George Lucas and Steven Spielberg raping Indiana Jones." The phrase "they raped my childhood" gets thrown around a lot on the internet, but when you're Trey Parker and Matt Stone, you don't just say that. You take it to the full extent of that statement.
